ILLINOIS PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY LAW PARENTS
PAY
Parents are reminded that they can be held personally liable for
destructive acts caused by their children. According to the Illinois
Parental Responsibility Law, damages of up to $500.00 per occurrence can
be recovered from the parents or guardians of minors (age 11-19) who
willfully or maliciously vandalize property or cause a personal injury.
The law, passed by the 76th Illinois General Assembly, was the
Legislator’s answer to the growing problem of criminal action by minors.
In case of vandalism, the Local Municipalities will take all steps
necessary to enforce the provisions of the Illinois Paternal
Responsibility Law and in seeking restitution from parents.
