SUSPENSION
The suspension of a student is considered a serious punishment.
Nevertheless there are situations which warrant such a serious
consequence. (See
DISCIPLINARY INFRACTIONS/DISCIPLINE OPTIONS
chart.)
Suspensions may be one of two types:
In-School Suspension is the temporary exclusion of a student from regular
classes for a period of time designated by school administration. During
this time the student is separated from his classmates and regular
teachers by being placed in a classroom outside his grade level. He/she is
assigned schoolwork to do during this time. This provides the student with
the opportunity to learn, but in a segregated, supervised situation. The
work must be submitted to his/her regular teachers) upon return to the
regular classroom. The student will eat his/her lunch in the classroom
designated for Suspension.
External Suspension is the temporary exclusion of a student from school
for a period of time designated by school administration. These students
are remanded to the custody of their parents during the school hours for
the period of their suspension. Students are assigned schoolwork which
must be submitted upon return to school.
External Suspensions are counted as Absence. Both types of suspensions are
noted as such on the student’s attendance record which remains in the
student’s cumulative file.
Any eighth grade student receiving two suspensions will lose the privilege
to attend any of the eighth grade functions. Three suspensions will result
in loss of two eighth grade functions.
